On Friday night, Ken and Hans will discuss the creative steps involved in Disney art making, including the visual development of films, both old and new, and content from their Disney’s Animation Archives book series. They will then show how this art can inform personal work and provide insights into developing best practices, organizing studio spaces, finding inspiration, and overcoming artist’s block. A selection of original vintage Disney artwork will also be shown. A question and answer period will follow the presentation.

Disney artists Ken Shue and Hans Teensma, from Disney Studios in Burbank, California, will share both vintage original book illustrations from more than 90 years of Disney artwork, including selections of recent and newly illustrated story moments. They will even teach you how to draw Mickey Mouse! 

A question and answer period will follow the presentation.

In these popular two-day, plein-air colored pencil workshops, artist Amy Lindenberger shows how to simplify the complexities of a landscape and still render its colors and textures in a convincing representation and painterly fashion. Come enjoy a beautiful weekend In the Great Outdoors.


Experience with colored pencils is helpful but not necessary. 

No art supplies needed. Materials will be provided by the American Art Retreat. 

Wear comfortable, casual shoes and dress appropriately for the weather. 

You must be 21 or older to participate. 

Box lunches for both days are included in the ticket price. Please let us know in advance if you have any dietary restrictions.


About the Artist

Artist and teacher Amy Lindenberger is a charter member of the Colored Pencil Society of America (CPSA) and a long-time faculty member at the Botanical Art and Illustration Program at the Phipps Conservatory in Pittsburgh. Her award-winning work has been shown in national as well as regional exhibitions and is featured in the popular publications, Best of Colored Pencil, Volumes I, II and IV; Creative Colored Pencil Portraits; and Incite 2: Color Passions. Her latest work is CP Surfaces: A Complete Guide to Using Colored Pencils on Clay Bord (2016). Her gallery, The Drawing Room (formerly the Civil War Fine Art Gallery & Studio) is located at 333 Baltimore St. in Gettysburg.
